10 Years Ago This Week

It was 10 years ago that I obtained a business license for a law practice.

So much happened in my life which was the impetus for beginning this law firm. There were plenty of challenges, but I truly believe challenges are opportunities for success.

My opportunities began when I divorced in 1993, single mom with a 5 and 3 year old. It was an acrimonious divorce, with years of nasty custody and support litigation that took a toll on my children as well as myself. I wanted to create a better life for the kids and myself and I went to law school at night, while working during the day. Some days were 18 or more hour days in light of the distance from home to work and school.

Myrlys Stockdale Becomes Certified Family Law Specialist

The State Bar of California’s Board of Legal Specialization has just certified local attorney Myrlys Stockdale as a legal specialist in family law. Ms. Stockdale, 47, is the managing attorney of the marriage and family law firm Stockdale Law Firm, Inc., located in El Dorado Hills and serving clients for the past nearly 10 years.

She is a family law mediator, and serves as court-appointed special master and court-appointed minor’s counsel in the Sacramento area.

According to the State Bar of California website, “California attorneys who are certified as specialists have taken and passed a written examination in their specialty field, demonstrated a high level of experience in the specialty field, fulfilled ongoing education requirements and been favorably evaluated by other attorneys and judges familiar with their work.” Read more …

Our Local Real Estate Market May Surprise You

Is it possible that the local housing market is starting to rebound? According to two local real estate professionals it is. “Now is a great time to sell your home in El Dorado Hills,” said Hillary Sand a real estate sales agent with ReMax Gold in El Dorado Hills. “We are seeing buyers offering competing, greater than full price offers on homes for sale and homes that are properly priced are selling within days.”

Sue Palmer, a loan agent with Summit Funding which recently opened an office in El Dorado Hills echoed this sentiment. “There really is no inventory for homebuyers right now.” Palmer, who handles all aspects of real estate finance explained that despite the lack of homes for sale for buyers, those that are in escrow are closing. “We’ve seen a 400% increase in the number of loans in the past two months (April and May) over the beginning of the year.” Read more …

The El Dorado Hills Village Life Newspaper, created a special “Women in Business” edition which was published on January 25, 2012.

Among other businesswomen, Stockdale Law Firm, Inc. Managing Attorney Myrlys Stockdale was profiled in the special section.

“It’s always encouraging, especially in this challenging economy, to see so many dynamic women business owners and leaders in our community,” said Stockdale.

New Law: Teenagers Testifying in Custody Matters

This week (January 1, 2012 to be exact) marks the effective date of a new law allowing children 14 years or older to provide input on custody or visitation matters in family court.

Specifically, the amendments to Family Code Section 3042 provide that the 14 or older child “shall be permitted” to address the court unless the judge determines that doing so would not be in the child’s best interest.

There has been a great deal of discussion in the family law community about whether the potential benefit of child testimony outweighs the potential detriment to the child and the parent/child relationship. Read more …
